SC asks BCCI's Srinivasan

Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra of Supreme Court put some tough questions to BCCI secretary N Srinivasan on his eligibility to take over as president of the country's richest sports body because of his ownership of IPL T20 team Chennai Super KingsCheap DC shoes hats  Justice Mishra, along with Justice J M Panchal, was hearing a petition challenging Srinivasan being an office-bearer of BCCI when he owns an IPL team.

The petition, filed by A C Muthiah, former chief of BCCI and a known rival of Srinivasan in cricket politics, has taken on significance because by all indications, the latter is tipped to be the next chief of BCCI in place of Shashank Manohar. Srinivasan, who will become the president-elect by the end of this month, will formally take over as head of the cash-rich sports body next year.

On the conflict of interest charge, Justice Mishra asked Srinivasan how he could continue to wear two hats - as the administrator of BCCI and as an interested party in India Cement which had a huge commercial interest in the IPL team Chennai Super Kings.

Appearing for Srinivasan, noted lawyers F S Nariman and Mukul Rohatgi said that the conflict of interest charge was not valid as the BCCI secretary was not an alter ego of India Cement.

Lawyer FS Nariman explained on behalf of Srinivasan that there was no substance in former Wholesale DC shoes hatsBCCI chief AC Muthiah's accusation that India Cement and Srivasan would seem to be the same once the corporate veil was pierced.

In his petition, Muthiah argued that Srinivasan had violated the code of conduct forbidding cricket administrators from having commercial interest in any of the matches played under BCCI.

Nariman said that if the SC pierced the corporate veil, it would find that there were 12 directors who run India Cement. He also said that Srinivsan did not participate in the meeting where the board of directors of India Cement decided to bid for the IPL franchise for Chennai.

"So, where is the material produced by Muthiah to allege conflict of interest," he asked.

Lottery Tickets

I'm inclined to root for Anderson to succeed. After all, with the stats that he has produced, he gives the every man a window of hope: "If he can do it, maybe I can too!" All jokes aside, though, Anderson has been given at least two more chances to succeed than most QBs ever get in the NFL. It's now up to him to show us all that either he deserves the chances that he has been given, or that maybe, just maybe, his luck will finally run out.

This season of bitter disappointment prompted yet another change at QB, and both cheap Quinn jersey and Anderson were cut in the off season. Derek's future once again looked bleak. Then Arizona Cardinal's starting QB Kurt Warner walked away from $13 million and retired, leaving the team in the incapable hands of QB Matt Leinart. The Cardinals definitely had a hole at the QB spot that needed to be filled, and even after all of Derek Anderson's miserable play, he was called upon to fill it. After the team's poor output in their second preseason game of this, the 2010 season, Anderson was named the starter of the third preseason game. Neither Anderson nor Leinart has looked anything aything better than average thus far, and all reports are pointing to old #3, Derek Anderson, winning the starting job for the season opener.

Quinn played so poorly in his first ten quarters of action that Anderson was once again named the Browns starting QB. The fans were happy with the change, but their enthusiasm quickly turned to disgust as Anderson swiftly posted one of the leagues lowest QB ratings and his worst statistical output in a season to date (3TDs, 10 INTs, 44.5% completions, 42.1 QB rating). Anderson would start 7 games, and Quinn finished out the year leap frogging Anderson as starter in a battle-of-the-not-as-bad QB. The team finished 5-11.

Still, Anderson was given the oppertunity to compete for the starting job with second year QB Brady Quinn in the Browns 2009 training camp. The new head coach liked what he saw from Quinn, and with fans calling out for change, Anderson ultimately lost the job. It didn't look good for the young QB, but fate wasn't done smiling on Anderson just yet...

The team opted not to trade Anderson for value, despite many teams showing interest, and the fans were all set for a playoff run. But the 2008 season would be quite a bit different than the last. The Browns were playing one of the 5 most difficult schedules in the league on paper. They started 4 different QBs over the course of the year with Anderson playing in only 10 games. He threw only 9 TDs to 8 picks, completing only 50.2 percent of his passes for a QB rating of 66.5. The team would finish 4-12, dead last in the division.

Even with the sting of a terible season-ending loss still on his toungue, an injury to New England Patriots jersey  QB Tom Brady that he suffered in the playoffs left a Pro Bowl spot open, and Derek Anderson had already been named the first alternate QB, putting him into the Pro Bowl. This turn of good fortune, compounded with his team falling just short of the post season, left Browns fans very optimistic for their new QB and the 2008 season.

The following year, Anderson started 15 of the team's regular season games. On the surface he looked successful, leading the team to 10 wins. Anderson threw 29 TDs to 19 interceptions, which does seem very respectable, but there were at least 12 more balls that bounced of the hands of defenders, and in some cases, bounced right off of their chests. Also, the Browns played what was quite possibly the easiest schedule in the entire league (AFC east, NFC west, Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans). The Browns season finale would put the team in a win-and-get-in playoff scenario, but Anderson threw 5 picks in his worst outing of the season and the most meaningful game of his young career. The Browns would fall short of a win, losing 14-19, and ultimately miss the playoffs yet again.

The Browns had featured nine starting QBs from 1999 through 2005, and made the playoffs only once in that stretch as a wild card team. On December 13, 2006, Anderson would become the tenth. Starter Charlie Frye injured his wrist late in the first half of a game that the Browns were losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 28-14, and Anderson would enter the game in relief of the injured Frye. Anderson lead the Browns on a 31-28 comeback victory in overtime, throwing two TDs to TE Steve Heiden in the second half, and so was issued in the Derek Anderson "era" in Cleveland.

In 2005, Derek was selected in the sixth round by the Baltimore Ravens jersey (213th overall), but he would never play a down in a Raven uniform. He was cut on September 20th, 2005, and was signed by the Cleveland Browns the very next day. So began an NFL career that any good poker player would recognize as nothing more than a dumb luck hot streak.

Arizona Cardinals QB Derek Anderson's NFL career may be summed up best by the late Dean Martin with one simple question: "How lucky can one guy be?" His stats resemble that of a journeyman backup QB, with career totals of 46 TDs to 45 interceptions, 21 fumbles (8 lost), a pedestrian 52.9 percent completion rate, only 7,093 yards, and a woeful QB rating of 69.7. Yet somehow, he appears poised to begin the 2010 season as the starting QB for the Arizona Cardinals jersey .

The San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings meet in a pre-season game in San Francisco

The San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings meet in a pre-season game in San Francisco.

The San Francisco 49ers looked very good in their opening game at Indianapolis, especially the defense, but there were definitely some areas that needed some work.  Alex Smith was 3 for 9 for 37 yards with an interception as receivers had trouble holding on to his passes but back ups David Carr and Nate Davis had just three incompletions between them as the Niners appear to be in good shape this year. Frank Gore didn't play and back up Glenn Coffee retired in just his second year as he had no desire to play the game. Anthony Dix on was impressive carrying the rock 21 times for 100 yards and a touchdown and Michael Robinson had five carries and a TD. The backfield will have a different look this week as San Francisco sign Brian Westbrook. Nate Byham had three catches for 52 yards to lead the team and Tony Curtis caught a touchdown pass. Reggie Smith, Mike Balogun, Diyral Briggs, and William James all had an interception while Bruce Davis had a sack and Nate Clements forced a fumble. Overall the Forty Niners looked like the contenders they are.

With all of the talk surrounding the Minnesota Vikings being based on whether or not he will return, now it will be when and how much will he play. Personally I would think Favre sees at least some light action in this game though I will update when we know for sure. In the meantime Tarvaris Jackson was two for four for 11 yards and Sage Rosenfels was a star throwing for 310 yards and three touchdowns. Joe Webb also had a touchdown pass and I think we see him possibly convert positions and makes the team because of his versatility. Webb ran three times for 24 yards while Toby Gerhart had eight carries for 24 yards and Ryan Moats had three carries for 16 yards. Garrett Mills had four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown, Marko Mitchell had a 71 yard TD catch, and Logan Payne had seven catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Jayme Mitchell had two sacks and Erin Henderson, Letroy Guion, Fred Evans, and Rhys Lloyd all had sacks in the winning effort. The Vikings look ready to avenge last years Championship Game loss to New Orleans and with Brett Favre back in the fold they are that much closer.

While Favre will be a factor long term, I don't expect him to be a factor in this one as I really like the depth both teams have at Running Back. I like the Niners at a field goal, at anything more it gets cloudy but I still like San Francisco's chances.

In each of his first five years he had a different coordinator. First it was Mike McCarthy. Then Norv Turner. Jim Hostler. Mike Martz. The revolving coordinator trend has stopped with Jimmy Raye. No wonder Smith has a newfound comfort zone.

He compares learning a new offense to a new language, with the additional pressure for a quarterback being the need and expectation that he is the best student.

"It's nice to feel like I am really fluent in this," Smith says. "If you're going to take ownership in something, you have to have that."

Raye senses the difference, too. During the offseason, the coordinator and quarterback spent more time breaking down defenses than they did last offseason when the priority was learning the offense.

Says Raye: "You can just see him flourishing, growing. It's becoming second-nature."

Whether this increased awareness translates into a better quarterback will have to be proven. The 49ers' season could hinge on whether Smith can finally live up to his lofty draft status. After finishing 8-8 last season and steadily adding key building blocks in recent years, San Francisco is a sexy pick to overtake Arizona and win the NFC West.

Much depends on Smith, who had a shaky outing (3-for-9, 37 yards, INT) in Sunday's preseason opener at Indianapolis.

"The next step is that leadership," says 49ers coach Mike Singletary, mindful of the morale-boosting effect of performance. "Being able to take an offense that might be stuck at some point in the game and being able to rally those guys together into believing in what we're going to get done."

Gonzalez and Bob Sanders could get their most important test so far in the Colts' preseason opener

Pure coincidence. I just happened to see this story headline: "With whom is Bell's toll OK?" The story is about a guy named Bell who wants to put up a toll bridge, or something. An editor was keen enough to see the opportunity for a nice play on words.

Also, pure coincidence: I had pulled at random a magazine from my Dallas Clark precious collection of old Life magazines. I do that often, and for a moment, immerse myself in the time depicted.
I've often said that the period from about 1937 to December of 1941 was generally a great time for about 85 percent of the population. We were gradually coming out of the Great Depression and we weren't in a war. Nobody had much money, but what little you did have would buy a lot. Anybody making $3,000 a year (I didn't know anybody like that) could live like a king. A brand new Chevy, Ford or Plymouth could be had for less than $700.

Small towns were the way they're supposed to be: around the courthouse, not sprawled all over the countryside. During that period, we got electricity, my brother was born, I started to school, Daddy got a pick-up, and he got a job—besides, I mean, farming our rocky 40 acres.

Radio was wonderful, with soap operas in the morning and cereal serials in the afternoon. And our town got a picture show.

This issue of Life is dated Jan. 6, 1941. It features a big section on Ernest Hemingway, particularly about the movie that was about to be made of his "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Famous photographer Robert Capra had made many photos of the area that would be the book's setting during the Spanish Civil War, and of guerrillas like the ones in the book, the people who were supposed to help Robert Jordan blow up a vital bridge.

And the movie does capture the landscape (shot near Reno) and the people perfectly. Hemingway wanted and got Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman for the leading roles, and the character actors were born for their parts.

I got hooked on Hemingway in the 11th or 12th grade. The last chapter Bob Sanders of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was used as a short story in a literature book. For a while, I read everything by Hemingway I could find. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is still my favorite Hemingway book, and one of my favorites period. (We will not mention some of his last works.)

The Spanish Civil War was a vicious, brutal war between those loyal to the Republic, the Loyalists, and the Franco-led fascist Rebels. The Rebels were backed by Germany and Italy. The Loyalists were backed by Russia and volunteers from different countries, including the U.S. Most people in frontier country, If they had heard about it, would have been, I like to think, on the Loyalist side.

There was no excuse for Anselmo to die.

I may have to go back and re-read "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

Gonzalez and Bob Sanders could get their most important test so far in the Colts' preseason opener on Sunday, at home against San Francisco.

"It'll be nice to play a game," Gonzalez said. "I feel like I haven't played a game since high school."

Sanders has started just eight regular-season games the past two years.

"I'm excited to be back on the team," he said. "There is a position I'm still fighting for, and I have got to keep on working. Melvin did a great job in the last year proving he can play. I just want to make sure I can keep healthy and stay on the field."

Sanders cleared up any concerns about his long-term status.

"I am as healthy as I have been in a long time," he said.

Gonzalez caught 57 passes for 664 yards and four touchdowns in 2008 while becoming Dallas Clark a trusted outlet for Peyton Manning. After he was hurt in the 2009 opener, he was nearly ready to return to the field several times.

It never happened.

"What probably hurt me the most was my own impatience," he said. "I was probably, let's say I was two or three weeks away from being healthy. I'd try to turn that into one, and boom, I'd have a re-injury. You just can't rush these things. It's a knee injury."

Gonzalez was impressed by his replacements. Garcon started 13 games last season and had 47 catches for 765 yards and four touchdowns in the regular season. He had 11 catches for 151 yards and a score in the AFC championship game and scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl. Collie, a rookie last season, had 60 catches for 676 yards and seven touchdowns in the regular season and 123 yards receiving in the AFC title game.

Jeremy Maclin immediately thought the worst

At least it's something that is going on in the NFC East. After DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin survived injury scares in Philadelphia, the New York Giants' Hakeek Nicks has now escaped without serious damage.

The second-year wide receiver was taken from Albany, N.Y., to Manhattan this morning for an MRI on his knee and the results turned out good. So good, in fact, that Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports he could return to practice on Thursday. Hicks was initially injured Tuesday. He received an MRI in Albany and then for a better look the team sent him to the hospital it uses when at home.

Turns out he simply hyperextended his right knee and everything "checked out A-OK." That's good news for a team that still has some question marks at the receiver position.

Jeremy Maclin immediately thought the worst, and the worst for the Eagles' wide receiver was a repeat of the knee injury he suffered as a freshman at Missouri.

On Tuesday, Maclin's left foot got caught in the ground when he was making a catch, and his leg bent backward. As he lay there in pain, teammates and the fans grew silent because they saw him clutching his knee.

"Your initial thought is always the worst," Jeremy Maclin said. "Just because experiencing that before, I've already gone through that, so I don't want to do it again. It almost felt like it did when I tore my (anterior cruciate ligament) my freshman year of college. Luckily, this time, I kind of caught myself before it actually went all the way back."

The Eagles initially called the injury a hyperextension, then changed it to a "bone bruise."

"The two bones banged, and he had a little bit of a bruise," Eagles coach Andy Reid said Thursday. "He's feeling remarkably well."

Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said Wednesday that Maclin was "day-to-day." Reid's update was as optimistic. "I don't think it will be very long," he said.

Maclin didn't practice for the second straight day, however, and was not part of the injured crew that worked outdoors with the training staff at Lehigh.

Receiver DeSean Jackson (back) and cornerback Asante Samuel (hamstring) ran on one of the side practice fields, and running back Mike Bell (hamstring) and tight end Martin Rucker (hamstring) appeared to do a little more. Reid said each of those players was close to returning.

Cornerback Macho Harris (hamstring), defensive tackle Antonio Dixon (concussion), and center A.Q. Shipley (ankle) joined Maclin indoors. Shipley said he was gunning for a Sunday return.

Reid said that he was remaining cautious with guard Todd Herremans (foot), who is on the physically-unable-to-perform list with center Jamaal Jackson (knee) and defensive end Victor Abiamiri (knee).

Feisty little dude

Reid said that the starting right-cornerback spot was still Ellis Hobbs' to lose.

"Yeah, it is that way right now," Reid said. "I love his attitude, too. He's a feisty little dude. He likes to play the game. And he's not going to take anything from anybody, and I appreciate that."

Hobbs, coming back from December neck surgery, got into a spirited fight with rookie wide receiver Riley Cooper on the first day of full-pads hitting.

Hobbs' competition was supposed to come from Harris, Joselio Hanson, Trevard Lindley, and Dimitri Patterson. Hanson has played mostly in the "nickel" spot. Lindley, a rookie, needs more time. Patterson's best shot at making the Eagles is on special teams, and Harris is injured.

Extra points

Tight end Cornelius Ingram, who suffered back-to-back ACL injuries, hasn't looked nearly as explosive as he did during last year's training camp. Reid said that Ingram "didn't have confidence in his leg" early in camp but that he was getting "a little bit better" each day. ... Linebacker Moise Fokou, who recently lost the starting strong-side linebacker spot to Akeem Jordan, has seen some time working out with the defensive ends during pass-rushing drills. Reid said Fokou mostly would play end in nickel situations. . . . The Eagles will return to Lehigh on Friday for just an afternoon practice.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers

Like the four quarterbacks with higher ADPs (Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Tony Romo), Brady has 4,200-yard, 30-touchdown-or-better upside.  Unlike the four quarterbacks with higher ADPs, Brady invites concerns about durability, motivation and supporting cast.  Of the quarterbacks behind him, only Matt Schaub seems a legitimate challenge to Brady's current ADP.  Brady's QB5 ADP and mid-fourth-round draft cost feels right.  Still, the very reasonable ADP carries significant risk.  The 4,800-yard, 50-TD season of 2007 is a distant memory.  Wes Welker may not be himself until well into the regular season.  Although there are lots of possibilities, there isn't a clear third receiving option on the depth chart.  The Patriots chose not to improve their running game, which could put more pressure on a passing offense that may be fighting rust and inexperience.

Brady finished with 28 TDs and almost 4,400 yards in 2009, but ranked just eighth over all in a banner year for quarterback play.  There's lots of room for Brady to fall short of his ADP.  And that's only half the argument.  When you consider the long list of strong quarterback-by-committee options to be had four to seven rounds later in your draft, Brady's potential reward isn't worth the risk.

Jackson is a special running back.  Fighting through back problems and stuck playing for an offense with a weak offensive line and a lack of skill position talent alongside him, Jackson still managed a 4.2 yard-per-carry average over the past three seasons.  He has made the most of his few red zone opportunities and contributes significantly as a receiving option out of the backfield.  He's reportedly healthier after off-season back surgery and faces a relatively easy schedule in the first few weeks of the season. Based on his last three years, a season of 1,800 total yards, 50 catches and 8-10 touchdowns is possible for Jackson, making his RB6 ADP in a PPR league legitimate.  But the supporting cast and back surgery issues still loom.  Despite his effort and production in the past three seasons, he finished 8th, 15th and 15th in PPR scoring in those years.  Drafting him ahead of an elite WR and waiting to draft a player with similar upside after the turn in the second round or later assumes that Jackson will play to his ceiling.

Chargers Coach Norv Turner predicted that Mathews would be given nearly 300 touches and praised him as a complete back shortly after the draft.  With Darren Sproles likely to see nearly all of the passing down duty and a significant number of change-of-pace carries, 300 touches seem the height of Mathews's expected workload despite Turner's coachspeak.  But that number really isn't all that far-fetched.  LaDainian Tomlinson was on pace for 250 carries despite a brutal yards-per-carry average last season, and parlayed plenty of goal line work into double-digit touchdowns.  If Mathews starts well, 300 touches, 1,400 total yards and double-digit touchdowns are within reason, as is his RB12 ADP.  But with Vincent Jackson's suspension looming, with the need for Mathews to prove himself capable late in games and on passing downs and with continued question marks about San Diego's run blocking, the borderline RB1 expectation is much closer to Mathews's ceiling than his high RB3 floor.

Speaking of doing things it couldn't late in games last year, the offense's performance in the 2-minute period struggled just like the last time it was in a must-score situation — the overtime NFC wild-card playoff game at Arizona.

Though the 2-minute drill didn't end with the disastrous turnover like the playoff game did, Rodgers' first crack at a game-winning situation in practice wasn't a success.

Starting at his own 40-yard line and with one timeout, Rodgers threw short to tight end Jermichael Finley for an 8-yard gain and then hit James Jones in stride on a slant that he juggled but turned into a 15-yard gain. After Williams broke up the deep pass to Jennings, Finley committed a false start and then dropped a catchable ball on the next play. That put Rodgers in third-and-15 from the defense's 42. He threw a short dump off to running back Brandon Jackson for 7 yards and then called timeout with 18 seconds left and facing fourth-and-8 on the 35. Trying to get one more first down and then get out of bounds, Rodgers threw behind Finley to end the drive.

Flynn, who has struggled at times early in camp, looked better in leading the backups all the way down to the defense's 8-yard line with 2 seconds left. But on the final play, Flynn rolled to his right and threw a pass toward the goal line that was broken up by linebacker A.J. Hawk. Flynn was 5-for-8 passing for 42 yards on the drive. There was also a 10-yard interference penalty on the defense.

Chargers: It's a 'relief' that Tomlinson is gone

LaDainian Tomlinson  has told anyone willing to listen he would be happy with any role this year with the Jets. His former Chargers teammates would likely disagree.

Tomlinson is expected to have a backup role behind second-year back Shonn Greene with the Jets. Last season in San Diego, Tomlinson's role diminished with Darren Sproles emerging as a consistent threat.

"That got real touchy the last 18 months," Chargers QB Philip Rivers told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Tomlinson's former teammates describe him as someone that demanded to be treated like a star.

"I don't know how everyone feels or if they felt it," Rivers said at Chargers training camp. "Maybe it was a little bit of a relief. Maybe it's a feeling of, 'I can do a little more without wondering what he thinks.'"

The Jets decided to release Thomas Jones, who had a career-high 1,402 rushing yards last year, and pursue Tomlinson. Some Jets have complained about losing Jones, who signed with the Chiefs, and his veteran leadership in the locker room. It's the opposite with the Chargers.

"Sometimes you would get the sense that people felt bigger than the team," tight end Antonio Gates said. "Not to say it was an issue, but we know it's not an issue for sure now."

"It's exciting," center Nick Hardwick added. "We're going to have to Darren Sproles come up with our own identity, and we don't know what it will be. We'll go through some battles and see. Things are going to start to emerge and develop. Guys are going to have to step up and assume roles maybe they haven't before."

Rivers is being looked at as the team's new leader.

"He has done a phenomenal job with opening relationships with people," Gates said. "… When you talk about great player, you have to be careful what you say. Obviously, I miss LT. I played with him a whole lot. But the reality is Philip and I have a more core friendship because of the openness.

"Me and LT had a wonderful relationship too. But sometimes you got the sense of stardom status and you can only take it so far. With Philip, I never feel that."

When the Jets signed Tomlinson in March, he said he would be happy with any role with the Jets.

"Absolutely. I have no ego," Tomlinson said. "At this point, it's all about having the opportunity to win a championship. The Jets made the AFC Championship game without me. How can I come in here and demand to be a starter? They were very good without me. I just want to have a role and contribute."

2010 Eagles defense will feature a number of new faces

We're just trying to find the best combination of the first three (linebackers)," defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said. "It really goes with the territory ... and it's absolutely not (a statement on Moise).

"If you've been around sports long enough, this happens all the time. At the same time, it's a challenge for Moise ... to rise up and respond to the challenge."

Jordan's not played too much on the strong side, but his overall experience Asante Samuel seems to be winning the day, and McDermott thinks he will be fine

"(Akeem) is showing us he can play any position ... he's physical, he's got a good feel for the game in both the run and pass game. The guy's a warrior."

This is not a settled position -- "Moise's best football is ahead of him," McDermott said -- and could change back at any time. But for now, it's Jordan.

New start for Arrington

So Kevin Kolb steps into an offense with Jeremy Macklin and Winston Justice as his DeSean Jackson two primary receivers. LeSean McCoy, Mike Bell, and Charles Scott are all in the rotation at RB, with McCoy being the starter and most likely work horse. The team is hoping Macklin really steps up in year two, and makes a huge impact on this offense. They would like to see him be Kolb's primary target. Brent Celek is the team's starting TE and he should play a big factor in their offensive production as well. The only real question on the offensive line is at RG, but that will get settled in pre-season.

The Defense will run a base 4-3 scheme and be led on the field by, well that seems to be the question as the 2010 Eagles defense will feature a number of new faces. Ernie Simms comes in to play OLB, they drafted Nate Allen to play FS. However this feels like a no name defense as the team looks for some guys to make an impact.

Before being slowed by a hamstring injury during a Sunday afternoon passing drill,Jeremy Maclin  the fourth-year pro out of Arizona was showing why Philadelphia signed the 225-pound back to an offer sheet in the offseason.

"He and LeSean (McCoy) really complement each other well," head coach Andy Reid said.

With the departure of Brian Westbrook, Bell's bruising style should prove to be LeSean McCoy a nice change-of-pace to the shifty McCoy.

"I have to open up my game," Bell said. "We're different from each other but because we have different styles we make the offense tougher to defend

Falcons were 28th in pass yards a season ago

Of course, before each season, hope springs eternal and somesuch other cliches about how things can go right for nearly any NFL team under the correct set of circumstances. And, indeed, the Falcons are one of those teams that can fare very well, provided everything falls into place for them. But such calculated assessments don't do well with the ticket-buying public.

Though the new Atlanta Falcons jerseys (28/1 Super Bowl odds) missed the playoffs, they managed to post a winning season in consecutive years for the first time in team history. Here is Atlanta's 2010 training camp outlook.

After a ridiculous 2008 season (1,699 rush yards, 17 touchdowns), Michael Turner fell off in 2009 as he dealt with injuries. Word on the street is he's lost considerable weight and is poised for a return to glory. Matt Ryan enters his third year at quarterback and may be ready for a jump to the next level.

If anything needs a fix, it's the pass defense; the Falcons were 28th in pass yards a season ago. Generating a stronger pass rush should be a priority this year, as Atlanta managed just 28 sacks last season. Unfortunately, very little was done to correct the defense in the offseason Jamaal Anderson and not much could change in 2010.

As you can probably tell, we're impressed with this ad. SI's Jimmy Traina is too, saying he's "ready to become a Falcons fan" after seeing the video. While we wouldn't go that far, it's a fine piece of advertising, and if we were Falcons jerseys fans, we'd definitely be ready to run through a wall.

The Tennessee Titans begin training camp

Cary Williams was disciplined by the NFL because of "a situation" involving his family in Tennessee while he was a member of the Tennessee Titans, his agent Marc Lillibridge said Thursday. There was no arrest involved, according to the agent.

Lillibridge appealed Williams' two-game suspension. He pointed out that Seattle linebacker Leroy Hill was suspended for one game after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drug possession in April and then was arrested days later in a domestic violence investigation (the NFL could still revisit the last incident and extend the suspension).

"I thought we had a strong case," Lillibridge said. "We reached out to the league office. But once the punishment is handed out, it's done. Of course I'm disappointed. But those are the rules, and the players have to abide by them."

Training camp will operate similarly to previous years. Free parking is available directly across the street from Baptist Sports Park at the CVS/Caremark corporate offices (445 Great Circle Road). A merchandise tent will be on site next to the practice field selling a wide selection of Titans apparel and merchandise, and cold non-alcoholic beverages will also be available to purchase. Fans can watch practice from the outside perimeter of the three practice fields, but spectators should be prepared to stand in typical Middle Tennessee summer heat for the duration of their visit, as shade and seating are very limited.

On the field, fans will see a club that expects to build on its strong finish in 2009, when the Titans won eight of their last 10 games. A collection of seasoned leaders, intriguing rookies and blossoming young veterans will be on hand as the team ultimately prepares for its Sept. 12 regular season opener against the Oakland Raiders. Between the start of camp and then, jobs will be won at vital positions, including cornerback, linebacker, defensive line and running back, and the roster will be pared from 80 players at the start of camp to 53 at the conclusion of the preseason.

Jeff Fisher, beginning his 16th training camp as head coach, will closely monitor the development of the entire cast, including starting quarterback Vince Young, who has a 26-13 career record and is coming off a personal best in 2009 of a 82.8 passer rating; running back Chris Johnson, who last year became one of six players in NFL history to reach 2,000 rushing yards in a season; Pro Bowl cornerback Cortland Finnegan, who has recorded five interceptions in each of the last two seasons; and defensive end Derrick Morgan, the team's 2010 first-round draft choice out of Georgia Tech.

Chris Johnson will report to training camp on time!

That's right, folks. The 2009 NFL Offensive Player of the Year has finally come to terms with Titans football jerseys owner Bud Adams to get him in uniform and on the field for 2010.

Whether or not he will have a repeat of last season and rush for 2,000 yards, no one can say for sure.

One thing we can all agree on is this is only a temporary fix to a much bigger problem.

CJ2K will get $2.5 million this season regardless of whether he breaks Eric Dickerson's rushing record or if he breaks his leg in Week 1.

The question still surrounding Johnson is what will happen after the season.

There are two scenario's that can happen:One possibility is Tennessee has a disappointing season and Chris Johnson flops. The entire year fans will talk about how the Titans should not pay him at the end of the season. The other scenario.Tennessee has a successful year and make it to the playoffs. Chris Johnson runs for an impressive amount of yards. All season long Titans fans will be in a state of denial forgetting all about the inevitable controversy bound to happen at the end of the season.

Here is where we get to the topic at hand.Titans owner Bud Adams has never been known to dish out tons of money.Hence why it always seems like the Titans never go after the big players in the free agency that would require big bucks to sign. The Titans always go for mediocre to somewhat decent talent so they will only have to give a mediocre contract to match. Now, don't get me wrong here.If Chris Johnson has an amazing year, I believe he will actually get paid. But it will still be dragged out and painful. However, should Johnson only rush for 1,300 yards or less, still having what we would think is a decent season, good luck getting 30 to 40 million guaranteed in your next contract.Unfortunately, this has been the story of the Titans franchise for some time now. I don't see it ending any time soon.

I am ecstatic that Chris will be going into training camp on time. I am especially happy that he will start the season on time as well. Not for just being a Titans jerseys  fan, but also because he's on my fantasy team. So, as you can imagine this is a much larger issue for me.All jokes aside though, having CJ this season will be.As I have said in previous articles, he wants to be a Titan. How much longer he will be a Titan, though, is the question. He loves his teammates like family. His offensive line are his big brothers.

While family is a great thing, the sad part about family is it will often split up and go separate ways.

Don't be surprised if this family splits up because Grandpa Adams and little CJ can't come to an agreement.

The Tennessee Titans and their running back

The new Tennessee Titans jerseys and their running back Chris Johnson has agreed to a revised deal that will ensure Johnson continues reporting to his teams training camp sessions.

While numbers have not been revealed, rumors are pointing to a $2.5 million payment for the coming season.

According to, both sides are reviewing the new terms and they are expected to sign a new contract within 48 hours.

"We're still talking through some issues," a source close to the deal revealed, "It's going to get done, but it's not done yet."

Johnson was hoping for a $30 million guaranteed payment contract after he was one of six running backs to rush for over 2,000 yards in 2009, however he's also no longer the lowest paid running back on his team  ($550,000 in guarantees last season).

Johnson still has three years left on his contract and he had mentioned that even a small raise would be welcomed. The Titans could have offered Johnson more money with an upfront one-time payment, however they were not willing to make that move at this time.

What do you think, should the Titans have offered Johnson more Cortland Finnegan upfront money to ensure he remains with the team for the long term?

Gage heads into the 2010 season knowing he has to do more, starting with staying healthy.

"I don't feel like I did too good last year, looking at the whole season,'' he said. "As a team, we started off 0-6 and couldn't recover. And when I finally started to make a move, I then missed four games with the injury. I never felt like I got into that groove and into position to be explosive and make things happen.

Tennessee Titans' Vince Young wants to keep momentum from last season

"And that is what this offseason has been about for me, to get myself into position to do more.''

Gage finished with 28 catches for 383 yards and three touchdowns. It was his lowest Kerry Collins  output as a Titan. He had 651 receiving yards and six scores in 2008, one year after hauling in 55 catches for 750 yards.

"I just want a career-best in every category. That's what I am shooting for,'' Gage said. "Whether it's touchdowns, receptions, reception yards, yards per catch, I just want to make this season a personal best, all the way across the board.

"I feel like I am poised to definitely excel toward the middle to end of training camp, heading into the season.''

Said Coach Jeff Fisher: "The injury set him back. He made some great catches for us. I am very pleased with what he did. … Justin has had a really good offseason, so he's ready to contribute again.''

Gage, an eighth-year pro, said the competition during training camp should be great for all the receivers. Britt and veteran Nate Washington hope to be more consistent, while promising rookie Damian Williams will compete with Lavelle Hawkins, Dominique Edison and others for playing time.

The Seahawks have added 1,000 season ticket packages for the upcoming season, the team announced Tuesday.

The addition brings to total season tickets to 62,000.

"With 60 consecutive sellouts and the beginning of a new era, we believed this was an opportune time to reward those fans who have patiently waited for a chance to purchase season tickets," said COO John Rizzardini said in a news release.

Single-game tickets go on sale Aug. 2. The Seahawks open the preseason Aug. 14 at home against the Tennessee Titans. The open the regular season Sept. 12 at home against the San Francisco 49ers.

Tennessee Titans - the team that selected him in the third round of April's

Fantasy owners everywhere are hoping that CJ can get some kind of deal that makes him happy so he can get to training camp and prepare for the upcoming season. If the hold out continues much longer, the people with the second pick in redrafts might actually have a decision to make instead of just being on autopilot and selecting whoever is remaining from AP and CJ.(both would be a pretty solid consolation prize) I'm sure the Titans realize they literally have nothing without Johnson and they will find a way to resolve this issue. Even if he does get something done, it is imperative that he participates in training camp because he could start the season shaky and the risk of injury is slightly higher for players who do not ease their way into the regular season. Obviously, you can't pass up a player of his caliber but if he misses a significant portion of training camp the decision between him and Peterson is much closer.

"I was blessed enough to have a healthy child. I can't imagine if she was having to be in the hospital and having to go through what a lot of parents have to go through," Curran said of his daughter Eleana, who will turn 2 later this fall. "It would just add so much stress. It's a great opportunity to be where I'm at, having just signed a contract and be so blessed, to be a blessing to somebody else."

Curran admits that his daughter's well being was a motivating factor in his decision to leave Georgia a year early, but his family's financial future is now set after he finalized a four-year deal and hefty signing bonus with the Titans on Thursday.

Not that Eleana cared much about the business end of her daddy's new job.

"She's just making life great," Curran said with a smile. "I got back from signing a contract and all that and went and saw her and she ran up and gave me a big hug and told me that she loved me. I just forgot the contract and everything. I forgot about all of it. ... There's nothing like (parenthood). It's awesome."

Curran spent part of his afternoon Saturday bringing smiles to the parents and children who paid $25 apiece to meet some of their favorite current and former Bulldogs and help raise money for the aforementioned charities.

He was joined by numerous current Bulldogs, as well as ex-Georgia greats like Champ Bailey, Robert Edwards, D.J. Shockley and Countdown to Kickoff founders Matt and Jon Stinchcomb and David Greene.

Curran was listed as a host of Saturday's event, although he was unsure exactly what Kerry Collins duties were included in his job description. If his ability to greet each fan with a warm smile and a hug or a handshake made Curran a host, though, he was an obvious choice for the job.

Life is unquestionably rosy right now for the NFL rookie, who plays a position beloved by his new head coach, Jeff Fisher.

"Out of all the coaches in the league, I thought (Tennessee) was a great place for him," said former Georgia linebacker Randall Godfrey, who was a second-team All-Pro with Fisher and the Titans in 2000. "You're talking about a defensive-minded coach, a guy who loves linebackers. I think he's gonna have a great career in Tennessee."

Much like he did at Georgia, Curran might have to contribute early in his Titans career. Injuries and suspensions have thinned Tennessee's ranks at linebacker, creating a void that some players - possibly Curran - will have to fill.

"I'll take any opportunity I can get," he said. "My job is to train as if I'm Chris Johnson a starter, and I'm just waiting for that break to come. That's the same thing I did at UGA when I got here as a freshman. I tried to play my role and do extra work and doing whatever it takes."

Curran is also pleasantly surprised by how generous the veterans at his position - a group that new Tennessee Titans jerseys includes former Georgia star Will Witherspoon - have been to him and the other rookie linebackers. That warm reception runs counter to what he was told to expect in the professional ranks.

"Talking to guys who are in the league, some of the former players, you hear, 'Oh, it's just a job. Guys just come in and don't really hang out like we did in college,' " Curran said. "One of the things that surprised me was how cool the vets were and how they embraced me and wanted to help.

"You'd think guys would be kinda threatened by you coming in, being a high pick. It's a job, because Cortland Finnegan you've got guys that are trying to feed their families, but everybody there was just happy for me and wants to help me, and that's one thing that surprised me that I'm happy about."

Perhaps the vets simply identified Curran's professional promise - much like former Bulldog and Titan Godfrey, who predicted Curran will be a "tackling machine" and fan favorite in Nashville, just as he was in Athens.

The Titans drafted Derrick Morgan with their first round pick

The Titans are hoping that they will get more of the Vince Young that finished the 2009 season, than the one that got booed off the field in 2008. Young did get in some legal troubles this offseason, but isn't expected to be suspended. Also, Kerry Collins decided to stick around, and will be a nice backup if Young struggles.

There is no question that the majority of the Titans offense will be ran through Johnson, but don't be surprised if the Kerry Collins Titans cut back on his carries a bit in 2010. That means either Javon Ringer or undrafted back LeGarrette Blount need to show they are ready to contribute.

At wide receiver, the Titans look like they have the makings of a great player in second year pro Kenny Britt, but many question the work ethic Britt brings to the locker room. Nate Washington and Justin Gage round out the top three receivers, but neither are real threats to opposing defenses. At tight end, Bo Scaife is likely in his final season with the team, and that means the Titans need to see something out of youngster Jared Cook this season.

The offensive line deserves more credit than they are getting for the amazing season put together by Johnson, and they will be the key to the Titans getting back to the playoffs in 2010.  It looks as though the days are over for Kevin Mawae as the starting center in Tennessee, as the Titans are expected to move Eugene Amano to center and slip in Leroy Harris at the left guard spot.

There is no question the Titans felt the loss of Albert Haynesworth on the defensive line, but there is hope that this unit Cortland Finnegan can get things turned around. Jason Jones and Tony Brown hold down the two tackle spots, but for this unit to excel, they need Jones to put together a big season. The Titans drafted Derrick Morgan with their first round pick, and he is expected to step in right away and start at defensive end opposite of William Hayes, as Kyle Vanden Bosch left town to play for the Detroit Lions.

At linebacker, it doesn't look like Keith Bulluck will be back, and the Titans jerseys are ready for that, with the addition of Will Witherspoon, who is expected to start in Bulluck's old spot. David Thorton returns as the other starting outside linebacker, but his job isn't safe and we could see more of Gerald McRath this season. In the middle, Stephen Tulloch is back and must play well for this unit to improve.

In the secondary, the Titans bring back a very solid corner in Cortland Finnegan, but who will start on the other side is up in the air. With Rod Hood being placed on the IR, it looks like it will likely come down to Jason McCourty, Ryan Mouton, and Alterruan Verner in training camp.

At safety the Titans are hoping for a big season from both Chris Hope and Michael Griffin, who both failed to live up to their Pro Bowl performances in 2008.

Curran was the team's second third-round selection, 97th overall, in the 2010 NFL Draft after Chris Johnson  a three-year career at Georgia.

He made 298 tackles and recorded 6 1/2 sacks during his time with the Bulldogs. During his sophomore and junior seasons, he became the first Georgia player with 100 or more stops in back-to-back campaigns since 1996-97.

Ryan caught 14 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, all career-highs, for Kansas City last season in 10 games, eight as a starter.

The Seattle Seahawks have consistently been picked

The 49ers can't really be called sleepers anymore with nearly every pundit around calling for them to win the division, and the Cardinals will likely to take a giant step backwards after losing Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin and Karlos Dansby. That leaves Seattle (sorry St. Louis, but no) as the go-to pick here. Russell Okung is an upgrade at left tackle, and he might actually keep Matt Hasselbeck healthy for an entire season. Justin Forsett emerged as a scintillating runner near the end of the '09 season, and anyone other than Julius Jones is a step in the right direction. Earl Thomas is a rookie but should fill the role of free safety better than anyone the Seahawks have had recently.

Seattle is relying on a lot of first year talent, but if guys like Lofa Tatupu can Seattle Seahawks return from injury with no ill effects, they could begin to see some success after a hiatus from owning the division. If nothing else, Pete Carroll will energize the franchise, and he might be able to coach current bust defensive end Lawrence Jackson into the player he was at USC.

From Thomasville, Ga., Miranda (6-0/175) was a dangerous kickoff return man to go Seattle Seahawks with his skills in the secondary. He was selected in the fourth round of the 1999 NFL  draft by the Indianapolis Colts. He spent one year with the Colts  and two with the Seattle Seahawks.

Miranda holds school records for kickoff return average in a season (30.7) and career (33.3). He recorded 56 tackles. two interceptions and six pass breakups in 1998.

Atlanta Falcons are in one of the tougher divisions in the NFC

That's too good to pass up and grabbing the 'under' seven wins and getting plus 125 in the bargain makes this a must-play future.

This is basically the same Seattle team that finished with just 280 points in 2009 — the franchise's fewest since 1993. Meanwhile, the defense has not performed up to the investment the Seahawks made in terms of draft picks and free agents.

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who turns 35 in September, has one year left on his contract and a history on injuries. Yet with a lot of quarterbacks on the offseason market, Seattle opted for Charlie Whitehurst, the San Diego Chargers No. 3 QB who has never attempted a regular-season pass.

The West is arguably the weakest division in the NFC, but the Seahawks shape up as the worst team in the conference. That's right, worse than Detroit and Tampa Bay.

Conversely, the Atlanta Falcons jerseys are in one of the tougher divisions in the NFC. But considering they have averaged 10 wins over the last two seasons, there's no reason to believe they can't reach double-digits again.

Don't be surprised if the New Orleans Saints take a step back with their first-place schedule, leaving the penthouse vacant for the Falcons football jerseys.

The 2009 season was derailed when Michael Turner and Matt Ryan battled injuries. Atlanta averaged 25.3 points in eight games with a healthy Turner and 20.1 in eight games without the elusive running back.

Ryan suffered through a sophomore slump and battled through some rough spots but he finished strong and should emerge as one of the NFL's elite quarterback in his third season in Georgia.

The Falcons offseason was rather quiet, but the addition of free-agent cornerback Dunta Robinson is going to help the defense immensely.

James has appeared in just one game for the Falcons after being selected in the fifth round of the 2008 draft out of Arizona State.

"Robert James of the new Atlanta Falcons jerseys  has been suspended without pay for the team's first four games of the 2010 regular season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances," the NFL said in a released statement. "James' suspension begins on Saturday, September 4. He will be eligible to return to the Falcons' active roster on Monday, October 4 following the team's October 3 game against the San Francisco 49ers. James is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games."

Peters a well-versed player for Falcons

Atlanta Falcons rookie Corey Peters is more than just a massive defensive tackle. A graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in history, he also knows a thing of two about our country, particularly in his area of interest: the Old South and the U.S. prior to the Civil War.

In fact, long before he began to realize his potential as a football prospect, Peters' dream was to be a teacher, which he says he'll still follow through on after his playing days are over.

During the final day of Organized Team Activities last month in Flowery Branch, Peters, a third-round draft selection by the Falcons jerseys, chatted with Times sports writer Bill Murphy about his first glimpse of life as an NFL player, the sports scene at Kentucky and his plans for life after football.

Question: Has the OTA process been a lot of new things being thrown at you at once?

Answer: Most definitely. I think that's the focus here that you really learn the playbook going into camp. Summer camp really isn't the time you want to be struggling with what you're supposed to be doing.

If anything, we just have to really learn the playbook. Then we have a month off and just have to continue to study it and be 100 percent sure when time comes to come back into camp.

Q: What is your first impression of the new Atlanta Falcons jerseys ?

A: I'm extremely impressed. I think there is great leadership on the team and a lot of guys step up and try to get you going and try to give you positive feedback. They also let you know when you're doing bad, so it's all been positive. I'm expecting big things from the defense.

You know, it's hard to have a measuring stick since I've never played in the NFL, but the offensive line seems pretty good to me, so I'm looking forward to this year and we'll be able to build on last year.

Q: What was it like playing football at the University of Kentucky where basketball is king?

A: In my time at Kentucky, it was very positive. My freshman year, we won eight games, so the support from that kind of carried on throughout my career. If you think back three or four years, the basketball team wasn't doing so well. They really kind of regained their momentum this year, so obviously it's a basketball school, but our success in football gave the fans something to cheer about and really get behind us.

Now the support for football, I doubt that it will ever equal basketball at Kentucky, but the fans are really supportive of the football program too. It was a great place to play football.

Jessica Simpson is dating once more, and again is going out with a football player. The pop singer, who turns 30 on Saturday, has begun seeing former NFL pro Eric Johnson - who played tight end for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints from 2001 to 2007 (he's not the unrelated, same-name linebacker who played for the Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals from 2000 to 2005.)

St. Louis Rams with Joe Flacco

Hull (6-3, 239) began his career as a walk-on at Penn State and finished it as one of the most productive defenders in the Big Ten. As a senior, he led the team and was fifth in the Big Ten with 116 tackles, becoming just the 20th Nittany Lion in the program's 123-year history to eclipse 100 tackles in a season. Hull was taken in the seventh round with the 254th overall pick.

Also signing were third-round pick Jerome Murphy (cornerback, South Florida), fourth-round selection Mardy Gilyard (recierver, Cincinnati), fifth-rounders Michael Hoomanawanui (tight end, Illinois) and Hall Davis (defensive end, Louisiana-Lafayette), sixth-round pick Eugene Sims (defensive end, West Texas A&M) and seventh-round selections Marquis Johnson (cornerback, Alabama) and George Selvie (defensive end, South Florida).

Terms of the deals were undisclosed.

"I am happy to have these players signed," said  St. Louis Rams  coach Steve Spagnuolo on the team's website. "Once training camp begins, these rookies can direct all of the focus on football and not be concerned with the business side of things."

The acquisition of former Pro Bowl QB Marc Bulger via free agency from the St. Louis Rams is correctly being lauded as a strong move by Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome- the latest in a string of good moves by the "Wizard of Oz" this offseason.

However, it is extremely unlikely that the Ravens would carry 4 quarterbacks on their active roster this season. Obviously, Joe Flacco is safe: he's the starter. Similarly, Bulger is safe, as he wasn't signed to be cut. That leaves QBs John Beck and Troy Smith.

Two factors point to Smith leaving Baltimore: first, he's asked for a trade in the past- he correctly assumes that he'll be behind Flacco as long as he stays in Baltimore, and he understandably wants to play. Second, his trade value is likely higher (read: existent) relative to Beck.

Smith will probably be with the Ravens through training camp, but expect Smith to be dealt for a later round pick sometime during the preseason.

Thlete Devin Thomas appears in the video

Just days before the official video premiere American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino is offering up a behind the scenes look at "Bittersweet".

Capturing the essence of a 1920s club, Fantasia attempts to stay focused on the audience before her (while performing) but finds the task difficult as memories of the man she once loved flood her mind.

Watch the behind the scenes clip featuring commentary from both Fantasia and those behind the video's concept below.

As previously reported, athlete Devin Thomas appears in the video, which premieres Friday, June 25 on VEVO. Fantasia's third studio album, her first since 2006s "Fantasia," is slated for release August 10.
