SC asks BCCI's Srinivasan

Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra of Supreme Court put some tough questions to BCCI secretary N Srinivasan on his eligibility to take over as president of the country's richest sports body because of his ownership of IPL T20 team Chennai Super KingsCheap DC shoes hats  Justice Mishra, along with Justice J M Panchal, was hearing a petition challenging Srinivasan being an office-bearer of BCCI when he owns an IPL team.

The petition, filed by A C Muthiah, former chief of BCCI and a known rival of Srinivasan in cricket politics, has taken on significance because by all indications, the latter is tipped to be the next chief of BCCI in place of Shashank Manohar. Srinivasan, who will become the president-elect by the end of this month, will formally take over as head of the cash-rich sports body next year.

On the conflict of interest charge, Justice Mishra asked Srinivasan how he could continue to wear two hats - as the administrator of BCCI and as an interested party in India Cement which had a huge commercial interest in the IPL team Chennai Super Kings.

Appearing for Srinivasan, noted lawyers F S Nariman and Mukul Rohatgi said that the conflict of interest charge was not valid as the BCCI secretary was not an alter ego of India Cement.

Lawyer FS Nariman explained on behalf of Srinivasan that there was no substance in former Wholesale DC shoes hatsBCCI chief AC Muthiah's accusation that India Cement and Srivasan would seem to be the same once the corporate veil was pierced.

In his petition, Muthiah argued that Srinivasan had violated the code of conduct forbidding cricket administrators from having commercial interest in any of the matches played under BCCI.

Nariman said that if the SC pierced the corporate veil, it would find that there were 12 directors who run India Cement. He also said that Srinivsan did not participate in the meeting where the board of directors of India Cement decided to bid for the IPL franchise for Chennai.

"So, where is the material produced by Muthiah to allege conflict of interest," he asked.
